GLP-1 Drugs Aid Kids With Type 2 Diabetes
2 Oct
Summary
- GLP-1 medications significantly reduced weight in young type 2 diabetics.
- Blood pressure and blood sugar control improved in study participants.
- The drugs are approved for children aged 12 and older in the US.
Real-world data confirms that GLP-1 medications provide significant benefits for young individuals diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. The drugs have been shown to help children, adolescents, and young adults achieve weight loss, a crucial step for many who have struggled with weight gain for years despite lifestyle changes. This study, presented on September 30, 2026, focused on patients aged 6 to 24 across Germany, Austria, and Luxembourg.
The research tracked nearly 1,900 participants from 2019 to 2025, observing a notable increase in GLP-1 prescriptions among young diabetics. A subset of 240 patients, with a median age of 16.4 years, demonstrated considerable improvements while on GLP-1 therapy for a median of 11 months.
Key findings indicate that over a third of participants achieved at least a 5% reduction in their age-adjusted body mass index (BMI), with an average reduction of 2.3%. Furthermore, the study observed improvements in health markers, including better blood sugar control and a decrease in high blood pressure incidence from 60% to 52%. These positive outcomes suggest that GLP-1s can help reduce the likelihood of obesity-related conditions like depression and sleep apnea.
While the drugs are approved for weight management and diabetes control in specific age groups in the United States and Europe, this study provides valuable insights into their effectiveness in everyday clinical practice. The findings are considered preliminary, pending publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
