New Study Warns of Blood Pressure Risk with GLP-1s
15 Jun
Summary
- GLP-1 medications like semaglutide may increase blood pressure issues.
- Risk was higher in older adults and those with type 2 diabetes.
- The increase in risk was not solely due to weight loss.
A recent Northwestern Medicine study indicates a potential safety issue associated with popular GLP-1 medications, such as semaglutide, tirzepatide, and liraglutide, concerning blood pressure. The research, which followed more than 42,000 adults on multiple blood pressure drugs, observed a rise in hypotensive episodes, including dizziness and fainting.
The rate of these events increased from 8.7% to 10.2% within six months of starting GLP-1 therapy. This risk was notably higher in individuals aged 65 and older and those with type 2 diabetes. Researchers found that weight loss alone did not explain this observed increase in hypotensive events.
Experts emphasize the importance of ongoing clinical supervision for patients using GLP-1s, especially those already managing high blood pressure. While these medications offer significant benefits, vigilance is required to mitigate potential harm from hypotensive episodes. These preliminary findings were presented at ENDO 2026.
