25 Mar
Summary
- Nearly a third of global kidney disease cases are in India and China.
- Over 115 million people in India are currently affected by kidney issues.
- Chronic kidney disease prevalence in India increased by 5.6% since 1990.

Globally, kidney disease affects an estimated 697.5 million individuals. A significant portion of this burden, nearly one-third, is concentrated in China and India. In India, the scale of the problem is particularly stark, with over 115 million people living with kidney diseases.
The prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in India has seen a notable increase. Between 1990 and 2017, the age-standardized prevalence rose by 5.6%. This trend was officially acknowledged, with the Minister of State in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare providing this information to the Lok Sabha last year, citing data from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and research published in The Lancet.
