Glasgow Smear Test Uptake Alarms Health Officials
20 Jan
Summary
- Glasgow's cervical cancer screening uptake is below national targets.
- Only 46.5% of women aged 25-29 underwent smear tests recently.
- HPV vaccine does not replace the need for regular smear tests.

In Glasgow, approximately one-third of eligible women are not undergoing essential smear tests for cervical cancer detection. Recent figures from NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde reveal a widespread failure to meet the Scottish government's benchmark of 80% uptake across all age demographics within the region.
The overall screening participation rate in Glasgow is currently 65.2%. A particularly alarming trend is observed among younger women; only 46.5% of those aged 25 to 29 have had the test. While the 50-54 age group shows the highest uptake at 74.7%, it still falls short of the target.
Consultants with the health board are urging young women to continue with smear tests, even if they have received the HPV vaccine. They stress that the vaccine protects against most cancer-causing human papilloma viruses but does not offer complete protection, making regular screening a vital component of cervical health.
