Stomach Bug's Deadly Deception: Girl's Near-Fatal Sepsis

A 13-year-old girl, Felicity-Jo, experienced a terrifying ordeal that began with symptoms of a common stomach bug, including vomiting and severe abdominal pain. Her initial visit to Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital resulted in a diagnosis of gastroenteritis and discharge after she temporarily improved.

However, her condition worsened significantly one month later, requiring intensive care. Doctors at Burnley General Teaching Hospital identified congenital scar tissue in her bowel, known as adhesions, which had caused an obstruction. This obstruction led to a life-threatening infection and sepsis.

Felicity-Jo was placed in a medically induced coma for two weeks following septic shock and subsequent emergency surgery. Her mother has since spoken out about the rapid progression of sepsis and the potential dangers of misdiagnosing severe symptoms as a simple stomach upset.
