With winter approaching and a predicted increase in flu cases starting in November, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is emphasizing the importance of timely vaccinations. While current levels of major respiratory viruses are low, protection against viruses like flu, COVID-19, and RSV is crucial as temperatures drop and people spend more time indoors.
The UKHSA is working to protect millions of individuals most at risk of severe illness this winter. Vaccination is presented as a key step to minimize the chances of serious illness and hospitalisation, while also helping to prevent community spread. Several groups are eligible for these vital immunisations.
Eligibility for the flu and COVID-19 vaccines includes individuals aged 65 and over, those under 65 in clinical risk groups, care home residents and carers, close contacts of immunosuppressed individuals, frontline health and social care workers, and children and pregnant women. Additionally, those aged 75 and over and immunosuppressed individuals can receive the COVID-19 vaccine.
Pregnant women and those aged 75 and over can also receive an RSV vaccination. The maternal RSV vaccine offers protection to newborns by passing immunity through the placenta during their most vulnerable early months. Various booking options are available, including online via the NHS App or dedicated websites, through GP practices, and via walk-in sessions at local pharmacies and community clinics.
