The psychological impact of a genital herpes diagnosis frequently overshadows its physical symptoms. In England, new diagnoses saw a 3% rise in 2025, reaching nearly 29,000 individuals. Public Health Wales recorded 913 first-episode diagnoses in 2025, though caution is advised due to incomplete data.

Melys Edwards, a 29-year-old from Wrexham, shared her experience of initial grief and anger following her diagnosis. She found online information often sensationalized the condition, increasing her distress. Melys faced relationship challenges after disclosing her diagnosis, with one individual ending contact.

Edwards now uses her social media to raise awareness, stating, "Hardly anyone speaks about having herpes." She aims to be the support she needed when first diagnosed. Marian Nicholson of the Herpes Viruses Association noted that public understanding lags, with stigma rooted in 1980s campaigns persisting.

Nicholson clarified that cold sores and genital herpes share the same virus and can be transmitted via oral sex. She emphasized that genital herpes is generally a manageable skin condition, with many experiencing mild or no symptoms. Dr. Olwen Williams advised against sex during active outbreaks due to discomfort and transmission risk.

True prevalence may be higher than statistics suggest, as home testing is unavailable for genital herpes in Wales, requiring clinic visits. Challenges exist in timely diagnosis, with swab tests most effective within 48 hours. Access to sexual health clinics is also an issue, with unmet demand and delayed appointments.
