Cheaper Ozempic Arrives for Diabetes & Weight Loss

Generic versions of semaglutide, commonly known as Ozempic, are expected to arrive in Alberta pharmacies soon, offering a more affordable option for patients. Two drug companies have received Health Canada approval for their versions of the Type 2 diabetes medication, which is frequently prescribed off-label for weight loss.

Pharmacists anticipate high demand for these generic versions, as many patients find the brand-name drug prohibitively expensive. Health Canada suggests generic medications can be 45 to 90 percent cheaper, with one manufacturer stating their version will cost one-third of the original.

The drug mimics a natural hormone, slowing digestion, regulating blood sugar, and reducing appetite. Beyond diabetes and weight management, studies suggest semaglutides may offer additional benefits like heart attack protection and liver repair for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Shipments have begun, with one company expecting its pens to hit Alberta shelves "any day." While provincial coverage is under review, the increased availability and lower price are expected to encourage more insurance companies to offer coverage for these medications.
