20 Jul
Summary
- New Gem Breast Centre focuses on early diagnosis and treatment.
- Early detection is crucial as many early-stage cancers lack symptoms.
- Centre aims to reduce stigma and fear surrounding cancer diagnosis.

Gem Hospital has inaugurated the Gem Breast Centre, an advanced facility aimed at enhancing early detection, treatment, and prevention of breast cancer and other breast-related concerns. This specialized department, operating under the Gem Cancer Centre, was established due to the high incidence of breast cancer cases, with the goal of encouraging more women to undergo regular screenings and mammograms.
Dr. Praveen Raj, managing director of Gem Hospital, highlighted that many early-stage cancers exhibit no symptoms, making screening and self-awareness paramount. The centre addresses the common hesitation women experience in seeking check-ups, particularly when asymptomatic, and aims to break down the stigma associated with cancer diagnosis.
Radiologist and breast consultant Dr. Prema noted that while urban women face a 1 in 22 incidence rate, rural women face a 1 in 16 rate, with risk increasing with age. The centre provides comprehensive breast health services under one roof, recommending ultrasounds or mammograms based on age and symptoms, with annual mammograms advised for women over 40.
The Gem Cancer Centre is also offering free mammogram check-ups for deserving women, with over 400 registrations already received. Partnerships, such as one with the police department to screen women cops over 40, are being established to broaden awareness and encourage proactive health measures, aiming for more patients seeking check-ups than treatment.
