9 Feb
Summary
- Preventive drive against filaria begins Feb 10 in Gaya district.
- Nearly 4.4 million people to receive preventive medicine.
- Mega camp scheduled for Feb 11 for medicine administration.

Gaya district is set to commence a comprehensive preventive drive against filaria on February 10, 2026. This significant public health initiative focuses on both creating awareness and administering crucial preventive medication to combat the disease.
A mega camp is planned for February 11, 2026, to kickstart the medicine administration process for targeted groups. Health officials aim to reach 44.39 lakh individuals identified across 22 blocks and seven urban primary health centers. The medication will be administered under supervision and only after consumption of food to ensure safety and efficacy.
Over the subsequent two weeks, volunteers will conduct door-to-door visits to administer the preventive medicine to those missed, striving for universal coverage. Special teams and health workers are mobilized, utilizing 3,765 school premises. Children below two, pregnant women, and individuals with severe health issues are excluded from this program.
Filaria, caused by mosquito bites, is a major global cause of disability and can lead to social discrimination and reduced work capacity. Health officials emphasize the preventive medicine is safe for individuals with common conditions like high blood pressure or diabetes. Any minor post-medication symptoms like dizziness are viewed as positive indicators of the virus being targeted.
