Garlic Mouthwash: Nature's Breath of Fresh Air?
19 Nov
Summary
- Garlic extract shows potential as mouthwash alternative.
- It can offer longer-lasting protection than leading brands.
- Adverse effects include discomfort and unpleasant smell.

Researchers from the University of Sharjah have explored garlic extract as a potential ingredient for mouthwash, suggesting it could rival conventional antiseptics. Their analysis of multiple studies indicates that high concentrations of garlic extract can be as effective as chlorhexidine, the active agent in many popular mouthwashes.
The findings reveal that garlic extract mouthwash might provide more sustained protection against oral bacteria. One study highlighted a significant reduction in salivary bacteria with a three percent garlic extract compared to a 0.2 percent chlorhexidine solution over seven days.
Despite its benefits, garlic extract mouthwash is not without side effects, such as mouth discomfort and an unpleasant smell. However, these adverse reactions are generally considered milder than those associated with chlorhexidine, which can include teeth staining and taste alterations. Further clinical research with larger sample sizes is recommended to fully assess garlic's efficacy as a dental product.
