Drowning ranks as the second leading cause of unintentional death for children between the ages of 5 and 14, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The YMCA of Metro Denver emphasizes that these deaths are entirely preventable through education and focused attention.
To commemorate its 150th anniversary and the 5th anniversary of the Aurora YMCA, the organization is offering free community swim lessons. Up to 150 children, aged 3 to 12, can participate in this initiative.
Participants will learn essential water safety techniques, such as "sidewalk CPR," how to correctly use a life vest, and what actions to take if they unexpectedly fall into water. The YMCA of Metro Denver collaborates with local organizations to ensure these spots are filled, but registration is open to all.
The free Community Swim Lesson is scheduled for Saturday, May 16, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Aurora YMCA. For families unable to secure a spot, the YMCA of Metro Denver offers year-round swim lessons, recognizing swimming as a vital life skill.
