Morning-After Pill Now Free at Pharmacies Nationwide
28 Jul
Summary
- Emergency contraception is now freely available at pharmacies.
- The new service removes appointment and waiting barriers.
- Access is now equitable across all regions for women.

Emergency contraception, or the morning-after pill, is now available free from pharmacies, a move designed to end unfair barriers and a postcode lottery for women's healthcare. Previously, women often needed to book appointments with GPs or clinics, but the new scheme allows for confidential consultations with pharmacists or trained technicians, providing medication on the same day.
This initiative represents a major step forward for women's health, offering 'no appointment, no waiting and no judgement,' according to NHS National Clinical Director for Women's Health, Dr Sue Mann. The service is particularly beneficial for women in deprived areas, increasing access to contraception closer to home. Around 150,000 NHS prescriptions were issued for the pill in 2024/25, a figure expected to be surpassed by the new pharmacy-based service.
