Summary
- Over 200 samples collected for free high-resolution HLA typing.
- Camp offered expert consultations on treatment pathways.
- German lab provides free HLA testing for patients.

A specialized medical camp for children suffering from Thalassemia and Sickle Cell Disease was recently held in Visakhapatnam. This event saw participation from over 55 families hailing from Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, Paderu, Srikakulam, and Parvathipuram.
During the camp, more than 200 patient family members provided cheek swab samples for free, high-resolution HLA typing. Experts offered consultations to guide families on potential treatment routes.
Organized by MGM Cancer Institute, Chennai, in collaboration with Saptha Foundation and supported by KGH's Pediatrics Department, the camp also received backing from DKMS Foundation, India, through its Access to Transplantation (ATT) Program.
This program facilitates access to crucial stem cell transplants for patients facing various barriers. DKMS Foundation India has registered over 2,00,000 stem cell donors.
Dr. Deenadayalan Munirathnam highlighted that Thalassemia affects over 10,000 children annually in the region, emphasizing the need for early stem cell transplants. He noted that HLA typing is essential for finding matches.
Swab samples will be sent to DKMS Life Science Lab in Germany for free HLA typing, with results anticipated in 6-8 weeks.
