UK Charity Gives Free Heart Surgeries to Pakistani Children
3 May
Summary
- 55 children received free cardiac surgeries from a UK charity team.
- Procedures included complex open-heart surgeries and device closures.
- The team plans to return next year for further collaborations.

A significant humanitarian effort unfolded at Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) in Peshawar, where a medical team from the UK-based charity Muntada Aid conducted 55 free cardiac surgeries for children. This initiative, part of the Little Hearts Mission, provided essential treatment to young patients, many of whom would otherwise lack access to such care.
The 18-member team, comprising specialists from the UK and Turkiye, performed a range of procedures, including 44 non-invasive Cath procedures like ASD, VSD, and PDA device closures. They also executed eight complex open-heart surgeries and introduced novel procedures such as pulmonary valve implantations, previously costing millions in the country.
Patients, all under 15, were selected from the outpatient department, including approximately 15 Afghan children. The charity covered treatment costs for those not eligible for the Sehat Card Plus. The visiting medical professionals also shared expertise through workshops, enhancing the skills of local healthcare staff.
This visit marks the second successful mission by Muntada Aid to LRH in nine months, building on a previous trip where 70 surgeries were performed. The charity has expressed a strong desire to continue its collaboration with LRH, aiming to bring advanced paediatric cardiac procedures to Pakistan annually.
