Men Over 50 at Risk: 'Forever Chemicals' Speed Up Aging
26 Feb
Summary
- PFAS chemicals accelerate biological aging, particularly in men aged 50-64.
- Higher concentrations of PFNA linked to faster aging, especially in midlife men.
- France and EU are considering bans on PFAS in consumer products.

A recent study has revealed that middle-aged men are particularly susceptible to accelerated aging caused by persistent synthetic chemicals known as PFAS, or 'forever chemicals.' These substances, prevalent in everyday items like plastics and non-stick coatings, are long-lasting and have been detected globally in various environments and human bodies.
Researchers found that exposure to PFAS can significantly advance individuals' biological clocks, with men aged 50 to 64 showing the most pronounced effects. This means their cellular health indicates an age older than their actual years, potentially increasing risks for chronic conditions such as cancer and dementia.
Analysis of blood samples indicated that higher concentrations of certain PFAS, like PFNA, were specifically associated with faster biological aging, especially in men. The study's findings align with emerging evidence suggesting midlife is a critical period for environmental exposures to impact aging processes.
In response to growing concerns, regulatory bodies are taking action. France has already implemented a ban on all PFAS in clothing and cosmetics, while the European Union is contemplating similar restrictions for specific applications. To mitigate exposure, individuals are advised to limit consumption of packaged foods and avoid microwaving items in fast-food containers.
