Neck Pain After Burger? Woman's Rare Case Stuns Doctors
17 May
Summary
- A woman developed severe neck pain after eating a burger.
- A foreign object migrated outside her food pipe into her neck.
- Doctors in Chennai successfully removed the dangerous object.

A 46-year-old schoolteacher from Mauritius experienced severe choking and throat discomfort after consuming a burger on April 24. Despite initial attempts to manage the symptoms, her condition worsened, prompting an endoscopic evaluation in Mauritius which revealed the foreign object was no longer in her food pipe. She was advised to seek treatment abroad due to the complexity of her case.
Referred to India, she arrived in Chennai on May 2 and underwent a CT scan at MIOT International. The scan confirmed the foreign body had moved outside her food pipe, piercing the thyroid region and dangerously nearing major arteries supplying blood to the brain. A multidisciplinary team, aided by intraoperative CT imaging, surgically removed the approximately 24 mm long object. The patient recovered in the ICU and has since resumed a normal diet.
MIOT International chairman Mallika Mohandas emphasized that the successful surgery relied on timely intervention, advanced technology, and expert collaboration. The case also underscores Chennai's emerging status as a global medical tourism hub, although limited international flight connectivity remains a challenge for the sector in India.
