Food Recalls Spark Consumer Fears
7 Sep
Summary
- 94% of Americans worry about food recall frequency.
- Recall avoidance impacts entire food categories.
- Allergen contamination leads most food recalls.

A recent survey reveals that 94 percent of U.S. adults are concerned about the frequency of food recalls, a slight increase from previous years. Confidence in the effectiveness of recalls to protect public health has also declined.
These concerns follow a summer marked by several high-profile food recalls linked to disease outbreaks, including salmonella from jalapeños and cyclospora from iceberg lettuce. Data indicates that 67 percent of adults have avoided entire food categories after a recall, and 66 percent hesitate to repurchase the same product or brand.
Analysis shows allergen contamination was the primary driver of recalls between 2021 and 2025, accounting for 45.2 percent. Bacterial contamination and foreign objects were also significant causes. Overall, the total number of food recalls saw a 21.4 percent increase during this period.
Despite these worries, most consumers do not permanently abandon a brand after a recall. Factors influencing their willingness to return include the time since the recall, severity of contamination, and official recommendations.
