Study: Common Food Preservatives May Harm Hearts

A substantial French study involving over 112,000 adults has identified potential links between commonly used food preservatives and elevated risks of hypertension and cardiovascular disease. Researchers meticulously analyzed dietary intake over an average follow-up period of eight years.

During this timeframe, a significant number of participants developed hypertension or experienced cardiovascular events. Analysis indicated that higher consumption of non-antioxidant preservatives correlated with a 29% increased risk of hypertension and a 16% higher risk of cardiovascular disease. Additionally, increased intake of antioxidant preservatives was linked to a 22% spike in hypertension risk.

Eight specific preservatives, including potassium sorbate, sodium nitrite, and citric acid, were notably associated with higher hypertension rates among participants. Ascorbic acid was the only preservative significantly linked to increased cardiovascular disease risk, though researchers clarified this pertains to its use as a chemical additive, not dietary vitamin C.

While the observational nature of the study means causation cannot be definitively proven, experts emphasize the importance of consuming fewer processed foods, particularly those with chemical preservatives, to mitigate risks associated with heart disease and stroke. Further research is recommended to confirm these findings across diverse populations and inform potential regulatory reviews.
