Food Allergy Claims Soar 500% on Disability Benefits
20 Apr
Summary
- Food intolerance disability benefit claims increased 500% in five years.
- An ex-MP criticizes these claims, stating they exploit the system.
- The UK's welfare bill has surged, exceeding income tax revenue.

Benefit claims for food intolerances have experienced a staggering 500% rise in the last five years. This trend has prompted concerns about the integrity of the welfare system, with one former MP strongly criticizing what he described as "ripping off the public."
The Personal Independence Payment (PIP) system is facing increased scrutiny as the annual welfare bill in Britain has climbed significantly. Welfare spending has now surpassed income tax revenues, highlighting a substantial financial burden.
PIP is designed to assist individuals with long-term health conditions or disabilities affecting daily tasks. Those with food intolerances can receive up to £114.60 weekly, often due to the complex dietary preparation required.
In 2021, only 12 individuals received support for food allergies. This number has since grown to 78, incurring costs of £1,000 daily. While ADHD, autism, and anxiety are significant factors, obesity also leads to substantial claims.
A government spokesperson acknowledged the increase, stating reforms are underway to improve support and reduce costs, aiming to save nearly £2 billion.
