FND Doesn't Stop Solihull Mum's Cake Business

Sarah Lewis, aged 43, received a diagnosis of Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) in 2023, a condition affecting her nervous system and leading to significant mobility and speech challenges. Initially struggling with symptoms like persistent headaches and difficulty walking, Lewis has since adapted to life with FND.

Three years after her diagnosis, Lewis, now 46, operates a thriving cake business named Cakey Blinders from Solihull. She launched the company in October 2025, partly to provide a real-world business example for her son. Baking has become a therapeutic outlet for her.

Lewis emphasizes the importance of a positive mindset, stating that FND has "taken enough from me." She remains determined to live a high-quality life, undertaking family trips to places like Egypt and Disneyland Paris. Her resilience has also strengthened family bonds and her resolve to create cherished memories for her children.

FND symptoms can vary in duration and impact, with NHS indicating that while many symptoms are short-lived, some can persist for years. Treatment options include psychotherapy and physiotherapy, with many patients experiencing complete symptom resolution. However, gradual improvement is possible even for those with long-term disabling symptoms, with the right support.
