Florida Law Battles Firefighter Cancer Hazard
7 Jul
Summary
- PFAS chemicals in firefighting gear are linked to cancer.
- A new Florida law restricts and will ban PFAS use.
- Firefighters diagnosed with cancer cannot always respond to calls.

Firefighters across Florida are facing a potential health crisis linked to "forever chemicals" known as PFAS. These substances, found in firefighting foam and turnout gear, have been associated with various cancers, including thyroid, kidney, breast, and prostate cancer, according to the National Institutes of Health.
One firefighter, who wished to remain anonymous, shared his battle with colon cancer, a result of his career. While in remission, the illness has prevented him from returning to active duty, a devastating outcome for someone passionate about his profession.
In response to these concerns, Florida has enacted a new law. This legislation will ban the sale or purchase of PFAS starting next July and prohibit their possession or use, except in emergencies, by July 2029. This measure aims to safeguard the health of firefighters statewide.
