Florida Dengue Surge: First Death Reported

Florida is currently experiencing one of its worst dengue fever outbreaks in decades, with health officials confirming the first death related to the virus. Hillsborough County has seen an alarming rise in cases, with over 130 locally acquired dengue infections reported this year, a significant deviation from the handful typically seen.

Experts point to climate change and recent weather patterns as key factors enabling the virus-carrying mosquito population to expand and multiply. While many infections are asymptomatic, severe cases can lead to serious complications, including bleeding, shock, and potentially death. The state recorded nearly 200 cases in 2023, and this year's count already ranks second highest.

Efforts are underway in the Tampa Bay area to combat the outbreak, including mosquito spraying and inspections for breeding sites. Although recent mosquito sampling has not detected the virus, experts caution that recurring mosquito populations in Florida mean dengue poses an ongoing threat, potentially becoming a "new normal" for the region.
