Florida Reports First Dengue Death of 2026

Florida has reported its first dengue fever death of 2026, a somber milestone as the mosquito-borne disease circulates across the United States. An 80-year-old woman in Hillsborough County succumbed to the illness on September 4 due to complications including septic shock.

This fatality highlights one of Florida's most substantial dengue outbreaks in recent years. Nationwide, nearly 2,000 cases have been documented in 2026. Puerto Rico and American Samoa have reported the highest numbers, but Florida leads U.S. states with 332 cases, including over 150 infections acquired within the state.

Dengue fever typically presents flu-like symptoms and is generally not fatal. However, severe cases can lead to life-threatening issues like internal bleeding and organ failure. Health officials attribute the current outbreak to warm temperatures and rainfall, which create ideal breeding conditions for mosquitoes.

While the CDC considers the risk of widespread transmission in the continental U.S. low, increased mosquito control efforts are underway in Hillsborough County. Surveillance suggests transmission may be slowing, but residents are still advised to take precautions against mosquito bites.
