Florida Cyclospora Cases Surge to 158: What You Need to Know

As of July 18, Florida has recorded 158 cases of cyclosporiasis, a parasitic infection known for causing severe diarrhea. These cases are spread across 36 counties, with Miami-Dade County reporting the highest number. Nationwide, the CDC has identified nearly 4,200 cases in more than 41 states since May. Investigations have linked the outbreak to California produce supplier Taylor Farms, which issued a recall for certain iceberg lettuce products. Taco Bell and Walmart were among the retailers affected by recalls or product removals.

Symptoms of cyclosporiasis typically include watery diarrhea and can manifest two days to two weeks after infection. While most cases are not life-threatening, with 308 hospitalizations and no reported deaths nationwide, persistent or severe diarrhea warrants medical attention. Health officials emphasize thorough washing of fruits and vegetables, and cooking produce as additional preventive measures. The Florida Department of Health notes that cyclosporiasis cases are common during warmer months due to increased fresh produce consumption.
