Fitness Trackers Predict Pregnancy Early
20 Jul
Summary
- Fitness trackers are alerting women to potential pregnancies before tests.
- Body temperature and heart rate variability are key indicators.
- Some users find the data causes significant anxiety during early pregnancy.
Fitness trackers are increasingly signaling potential pregnancies to users, sometimes before a pregnancy test can confirm it. Hundreds of women have reported receiving early alerts through smartwatches and rings, with data like elevated body temperature and altered heart rate variability (HRV) serving as key indicators. This technological insight, while groundbreaking, is also raising concerns about potential anxiety among users.
For many, the first sign of pregnancy is a missed period, but wearable devices can detect physiological changes earlier. Elevated body temperature, which typically drops just before menstruation, often remains high in early pregnancy, a change detectable by temperature-monitoring trackers. Some users have even reported their devices flagging potential miscarriages through "major signs" notifications.
Experts acknowledge the growing use of this technology for early detection but caution about over-reliance. "We probably need a lot more data on the reliability," noted Dr. Stuart Lavery, consultant of reproductive medicine. "Otherwise, what happens is your levels of anxiety will just skyrocket." Oura's clinical director of women's health, Dr. Chris Curry, suggests taking breaks from the app if overwhelmed, emphasizing the ring is a support tool, not a replacement for medical care.
