Fitness Trackers Predict MS Worsening
5 Mar
Summary
- Fitness trackers may predict worsening multiple sclerosis disability.
- Decreased morning activity linked to 20% higher MS progression risk.
- Reduced activity correlates with brain atrophy in MS patients.
New research suggests that wearable fitness trackers could offer an early warning system for multiple sclerosis (MS) progression. Data collected from these devices may help identify patients at risk of increased disability and even brain deterioration.
The study, published on March 4, 2026, involved 238 individuals with MS who wore trackers for two weeks every three months over an average of three years. The devices monitored physical activity, sedentary time, and sleep patterns.
Researchers found that 120 participants experienced MS progression. Their activity patterns indicated a higher risk, particularly a decrease in morning activity. Those with reduced morning activity were 20% more likely to see their MS worsen.
Furthermore, declines in morning physical activity were significantly associated with brain atrophy, including a decrease in whole brain volume, gray matter, and the thalamus. These findings, while requiring further confirmation, highlight the potential of accessible technology in managing MS.
