New AI Tool Predicts Birth Complications Early
16 Oct
Summary
- New tool assesses birth complication risk at labor's start.
- Combines fetal heart rate with clinical data for assessment.
- Study involved over 145,000 births across multiple hospitals.

Researchers at Oxford University have developed an innovative tool named Fit4Labour, designed to assess the risk of severe birth complications during the initial stages of labor. This new system integrates the first 20 minutes of fetal heart rate (CTG) readings with crucial clinical data, such as maternal age and gestational stage.
This approach offers a more objective assessment than current practices, which rely heavily on CTG readings that can be subjective. Professor Antoniya Georgieva highlighted that Fit4Labour provides an objective, data-based evaluation, supporting obstetricians and midwives. The tool quantifies risk consistently, 24/7, unlike subjective human interpretation.
A study published in The Lancet Digital Health analyzed data from over 145,000 births in Oxford, Cambridge, and Sweden. The Fit4Labour assessment, available on average more than eight hours before birth, indicated that labors classified as highest risk were significantly more likely to experience complications for the baby. The tool also identified labors at higher risk for emergency Cesarean sections, paving the way for better planning and improved maternal and infant outcomes.
