While originating in Turkey, this trend has raised significant health concerns among dermatologists. The primary danger lies in the potential for unsanitary conditions, where fish and water can harbor dangerous bacteria such as Mycobacterium and Vibrio, leading to severe infections.

Reports indicate that outbreaks of these infections have been directly linked to fish spas. Moreover, the same fish are often reused across multiple clients, increasing the risk of germ and bacteria transmission. Ethical concerns also arise, with accusations of providers starving fish to ensure they consume skin.

Dermatologists strongly advise against fish pedicures, emphasizing that the benefits of exfoliation can be safely achieved through conventional methods. Using chemical exfoliants, physical scrubs, and moisturizers are recommended as effective and safe alternatives for foot care.
