Strangers' Lives Intertwined by Selfless Kidney Donation
30 Mar
Summary
- A police sergeant received a life-saving kidney transplant from a stranger.
- The donor, a college student, found the recipient through an online nonprofit.
- The two first responders met for the first time after the successful surgery.

A profound connection formed between two strangers, both first responders, through an extraordinary act of organ donation. In 2020, New York City Police Sgt. Christopher Romero began experiencing a rapid decline in his health, which was eventually diagnosed as kidney failure. He started dialysis, describing his condition as progressively worsening.
Meanwhile, across the country at the University of Nevada, Reno, college junior and EMT Lucas Gorelick was researching organ donation. He discovered the organization Kidneys for Communities, a nonprofit that facilitates organ donations at no cost to the donor. Around the same time, Romero was encouraged to create a profile with the organization.
Gorelick found Romero's profile and felt compelled to get tested, despite the inherent risks. He underwent a six-hour surgery in December during his holiday break, successfully donating a kidney to Romero. Weeks later, the two met in New York City, sharing their gratitude and the unique bond they now share.
