Maharashtra has confirmed its first case of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) for the year. The infection was detected in a seven-month-old boy in Washim.
Initial symptoms suggested an influenza-like illness, but PCR tests on March 30, 2026, confirmed HMPV. The infant was admitted to AIIMS Nagpur for treatment.
He has since been successfully treated and discharged, according to state health officials. This case is considered the first confirmed HMPV infection in Maharashtra, with only a few suspected cases previously reported.
Officials reassure the public that HMPV is generally mild and there is no current outbreak. The virus, first identified in 2001, primarily affects the respiratory tract and can cause symptoms ranging from a common cold to pneumonia.
Close contacts of the affected infant, including five family members, were tested. All samples returned negative, indicating no household spread. Health authorities are closely monitoring the situation.
There has been no unusual surge in respiratory illness cases statewide, according to the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme network.
