Command Hospital (Western Command), Chandimandir, has reached a significant milestone in advanced cancer treatment by performing its first CAR-T cell therapy. This cutting-edge procedure was administered to a 16-year-old patient suffering from relapsed and refractory B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (B-ALL).
The therapy, conducted by the hospital's haematology department, makes Chandimandir the second Command Hospital in the Indian Army to offer this advanced treatment. CAR-T therapy is a personalized approach where a patient's T-cells are collected, genetically modified with a chimeric antigen receptor (CAR), and then reinfused. These modified cells are designed to more effectively target and eliminate cancer cells.
This achievement underscores the Indian Army's commitment to adopting advanced medical technologies. The hospital's haematology center, recently established, has also successfully performed nine bone marrow transplants, further expanding its capacity to treat complex blood cancers. The milestone positions the Chandimandir facility at the forefront of cellular therapies for challenging haematological malignancies.
