Firefighter Heroes Face Cancer's Hidden Dangers

For over a decade, the Firefighter Cancer Initiative at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center has been a leader in researching cancer's impact on firefighters. This initiative works closely with fire departments across South Florida, aiming to enhance cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment for those facing elevated risks.

The program's work is deeply rooted in the experiences of firefighters, with their input guiding the focus of research. This collaboration has led to the identification of higher rates of certain cancers among firefighters and an examination of their protective gear as a potential contributing factor. Dr. Erin Kobetz, associate director for Community Outreach and Engagement at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, highlights that the initiative's influence extends beyond South Florida, contributing to a national dialogue on the unique occupational hazards faced by firefighters. A 23-year veteran of the Hialeah Fire Department, Eric Johnson, shared his personal experience with cancer, emphasizing the importance of regular screenings after his own successful treatment at Sylvester.

To address barriers to screening, Sylvester's initiative deploys two mobile vehicles offering primary care and cancer screenings directly at fire stations throughout South Florida. The primary goal of these mobile units is to facilitate increased cancer screening and early detection for first responders, thereby removing obstacles related to time and access that often prevent participation in recommended health checks.
