Daily Fiber Supplement Eases Knee Pain Effectively
30 Oct
Summary
- Prebiotic fiber supplements may reduce knee osteoarthritis pain.
- Inulin fiber improved grip strength and pain sensitivity.
- Gut bacteria fermentation produces compounds that reduce inflammation.
A new clinical trial from the University of Nottingham has revealed that a daily prebiotic fiber supplement could offer substantial relief for knee osteoarthritis pain. The research, published in the journal Nutrients, focused on inulin, a type of dietary fiber found in foods like chicory. This fiber passes into the large intestine, where it is fermented by gut bacteria.
The six-week INSPIRE trial involved 117 adults with knee osteoarthritis. Participants were given inulin, digitally supported physiotherapy, a combination of both, or a placebo. Results indicated that inulin supplementation alone was effective in reducing knee pain compared to a placebo. Notably, those taking inulin also experienced improvements in grip strength and reduced sensitivity to pain, benefits not seen in the physiotherapy-only group.
Researchers believe the gut microbiome plays a crucial role. When gut bacteria ferment inulin, they produce short-chain fatty acids like butyrate, which may influence inflammation. The study also observed increased levels of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), a hormone linked to blood sugar regulation and appetite, which was associated with better grip strength.
Dr. Afroditi Kouraki, the study's lead author, stated that targeting gut health with a prebiotic supplement is a safe and effective method for managing knee osteoarthritis pain. The findings suggest that dietary interventions can impact pain and physical function beyond the affected joints, offering a promising complementary approach to existing treatments.
