The Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) has suspended the license of the kitchen at Fortis Hospital in Mulund, citing severe food safety and hygiene violations. These included the presence of cockroaches in food preparation areas, clogged drainage with food waste, fungus-infested containers, and rusted knives.
The license, operated by M/s Sodexo India Services Pvt. Ltd., was suspended following an FDA inspection. Fortis Hospital stated it is taking the observations seriously and has directed the service provider to address them promptly.
This action is part of a broader state-wide FDA crackdown. In Mumbai alone, the licenses of Sophia College for Women's canteen and five other establishments were suspended for similar violations. These include M/s Mumbai Bites, Arihant Aahar-Onyx, Avenue E-Commerce Ltd, Janata Bakery, and PSN Supply Chain Solutions Pvt Ltd.
Further state-wide actions involved suspending the licenses of 25 food establishments and four edible oil and spice manufacturing units. Officials also seized food products valued at ₹22,045 and ₹3,150 in Kandivali and destroyed banned food colours. Seizures worth ₹18.83 lakh led to 10 FIRs and arrests, with four establishments sealed.
