FDA's Festival Calendar: No Ban on Fun, Just Safe Food
6 Sep
Summary
- FDA introduces year-round festival calendar for food safety enforcement.
- Focus is on food safety, not restricting festive celebrations.
- Existing 2011 food safety law is being consistently applied.

The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has introduced a "Festival Enforcement Calendar" as a year-round strategy to tackle food adulteration during festivals and large public gatherings. This directive clarifies that the FDA's focus is solely on ensuring food safety and not on restricting any festivities.
FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe emphasized that the order regulates food safety by applying the existing food safety law, established in 2011. This framework covers various events like weddings, bhandaras, and religious celebrations, ensuring food served is compliant and safe.
The standing order aims to provide clarity on the roles and responsibilities of officers, vendors, and organizers, thereby reducing ambiguity and ensuring consistent implementation of food safety laws.
This initiative is designed to be religion-neutral and festival-neutral, guaranteeing no discrimination. It does not prohibit community food distribution or interfere with religious rituals, ensuring festivals can be celebrated with joy and faith while prioritizing the prevention of foodborne illnesses.
