FDA Confirms: No Cyclospora in Taylor Farms Lettuce

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has determined that a sample of lettuce from Taylor Farms, initially identified as positive for cyclospora, was in fact a false positive. Experts re-evaluated the complex detection results and concluded the finding did not represent true amplification.

This clarification emerged as an ongoing multistate outbreak of cyclosporiasis has reportedly sickened over 1,600 people since May. Health authorities initially linked iceberg lettuce supplied to select Taco Bell restaurants in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia to the outbreak.

In response to earlier findings, Taylor Farms had voluntarily removed all iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico indefinitely. Taco Bell confirmed the removal of affected lettuce from its restaurants. Walmart also removed certain bagged lettuce products as a precaution, though no indication of contamination in their stores was reported.

Cyclosporiasis is a foodborne illness caused by a parasite, typically leading to prolonged diarrhea. Outbreaks historically occur in late spring and summer and are often associated with produce like bagged salads.
