Salmonella Cantaloupe Recall Hits Highest Risk Level
22 Apr
Summary
- Cantaloupe recalled due to potential salmonella contamination.
- FDA upgraded recall to Class I, highest risk level.
- Melons sold in California, Florida, New York, and Pennsylvania.

The FDA has elevated a cantaloupe recall to a Class I risk level due to potential salmonella contamination. Ayco Farms Inc. recalled 8,302 cartons of Ayco-branded cantaloupes, originally distributed to retailers in California, Florida, New York, and Pennsylvania.
This recall is considered high-risk because consuming the contaminated melons could lead to severe health consequences or even death. Symptoms of salmonella infection typically appear within 12 to 72 hours and can include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps.
Although no illnesses have been reported to date, consumers are strongly advised to discard the recalled cantaloupe immediately. It is also recommended to thoroughly disinfect any surfaces that may have come into contact with the fruit. The FDA's enforcement report contains lot numbers to help identify the affected products.
