FDA Approves Groundbreaking Hemophilia Treatment
8 Jun
Summary
- Pfizer's Hympavzi drug is now available for children.
- It offers an alternative to frequent intravenous infusions.
- The treatment reduces bleeding episodes in hemophilia patients.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has granted approval for Pfizer's Hympavzi, a novel therapeutic agent designed to prevent or decrease the frequency of bleeding episodes in children and specific hemophilia patients. This regulatory decision introduces Hympavzi as the first non-factor therapy accessible to pediatric patients aged 6 to 11 years who have hemophilia, with or without inhibitors.
The approval further extends the drug's usability to individuals aged 12 and older diagnosed with hemophilia A or B who possess inhibitors, which are antibodies that interfere with the body's natural clotting processes. Hympavzi is administered subcutaneously via an auto-injector pen, presenting a more convenient option compared to the multiple weekly intravenous infusions traditionally required.
Hypavzi has already received approval for patients aged 12 and older without inhibitors. The drug's efficacy was demonstrated in late-stage trials, where it substantially reduced the annualized bleeding rate in adults and adolescents with hemophilia A or B who have inhibitors. Hemophilia itself is a rare disorder characterized by insufficient blood-clotting proteins, leading to severe bleeding.
