Experts Slam FDA Approval of New Flavored Nicotine Products

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently authorized four additional flavored nicotine pouches from Helix Innovations LLC, marketed as the 'on!' brand. These newly approved products feature flavors such as cappuccino, autumn spice, and rich berry. The authorization occurred through a pilot program established last year, which the FDA states has accelerated its review process.

However, this move has drawn sharp criticism from health organizations. The American Heart Association contends that the FDA is disregarding substantial evidence that the tobacco industry historically employs flavored products and other strategies to hook young consumers. They advocate for the prohibition of all flavored tobacco products, including menthol, to safeguard children's health.

Nicotine, while not directly linked to cancer like tobacco, is a highly addictive chemical. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes its potential to harm brain development. Furthermore, the American Lung Association points out that prolonged nicotine use can result in permanent lung damage, stroke, and heart disease.

This decision follows a similar authorization for ZYN nicotine pouches, which reportedly have gained popularity within the Trump administration. The FDA had previously issued modified risk orders for nearly two dozen ZYN products, allowing them to be marketed with claims of reduced risk compared to cigarettes. The American Lung Association has deemed this a "appalling" decision, emphasizing the need to protect children from lifelong nicotine addiction.
