21 Jun
Summary
- John Thorncroft received an incurable blood cancer diagnosis shortly before Father's Day.
- The diagnosis came as a shock, as he initially visited for a routine cholesterol check.
- He has since found strength in family and mental health support, becoming a granddad.

In June 2023, John Thorncroft, a 58-year-old father of two, was blindsided by an incurable blood cancer diagnosis. A routine blood test, initially intended to check for high cholesterol, revealed chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) just before Father's Day.
Thorncroft, who felt perfectly healthy and maintained an active lifestyle, struggled with the news, particularly how to tell his children. The diagnosis was a significant emotional blow, making him feel like he had let his family down.
Blood cancer is a major health concern in the UK, being the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths. Over 280,000 individuals in the UK are currently living with this condition.
Following the diagnosis, the family took a cruise to the Norwegian Fjords. Two years later, Thorncroft experienced a mental health decline, but found solace and coping mechanisms through counselling.
Now, a grandfather, Thorncroft finds added joy in his family. He is currently on a 'watch and wait' regimen, with regular check-ups monitoring his slow-growing cancer.
