A tragic incident in Jacobabad has highlighted the deadly consequences of untreated rabies. A 42-year-old woman died of the disease on Thursday morning, nearly two weeks after being bitten on the hand by a mongoose. The bite occurred while she was harvesting crops in her village, but she did not seek any medical care.
She was brought to Indus Hospital exhibiting symptoms of rabies encephalitis, including fever, difficulty swallowing, and increasing restlessness. Doctors observed classic signs such as hydrophobia and aerophobia. Despite palliative care, she passed away the following day. Health officials stressed that rabies is 100% preventable through timely intervention, including wound cleansing and vaccination.
The hospital also reported other animal bite cases, including those from a donkey and a goat, underscoring the broader need for public awareness regarding rabies prevention. Data indicates 107 rabies cases have been recorded at the facility since 2009, with most originating from dog bites but including rare instances from wild animals like jackals and foxes, and now a mongoose.
