3 Oct
Summary
- NHS initiative speeds up treatment for military personnel.
- Waiting times reduced significantly in six months.
- 486 personnel received accelerated care in initial phase.

Hundreds of soldiers, sailors, and aircrew are now receiving faster NHS treatment thanks to the Further Faster Armed Forces (FF-AF) initiative. This program, involving 20 NHS trusts, targets serving personnel with extended waiting lists, providing investment for extra clinics and operating theatre time. The goal is to expedite care and prepare injured personnel for action sooner.
During the initiative's first phase, from January to March, 486 military personnel had their treatments accelerated. Key areas like ear, nose, and throat services saw waiting times fall from 16.9 to 11.8 weeks, while trauma and orthopaedics dropped from 13.9 to 9.7 weeks. Participating hospitals increased daily operations and clinic availability, with staff assisting service members with appointments, travel, and time off.
This collaboration between the NHS and Defence Medical Services aims to address the unique challenges faced by military personnel. By proactively managing their care and overcoming barriers, the FF-AF initiative supports the operational readiness of the UK armed forces and ensures those who serve receive timely, effective healthcare.
