29 Mar
Summary
- Unhappy family relationships increased dementia risk by 66 percent.
- Study analyzed over 104,000 UK adults aged 40-69.
- Friendship satisfaction showed no significant link to dementia.

New research indicates a strong connection between the quality of family relationships and cognitive health, specifically the risk of developing dementia.
The study, involving over 104,000 adults in the UK aged 40 to 69, tracked participants for more than 13 years. During this period, 1,359 individuals were diagnosed with dementia.
Analysis revealed that dissatisfaction with family relationships was associated with a 34 percent increased risk of dementia. This risk escalated to 66 percent for those reporting very unhappy family connections.
In contrast, the study, published in the journal Alzheimer's & Dementia, found no significant association between dissatisfaction in friendships and dementia risk. These findings suggest that the quality of family ties may be a crucial factor in assessing dementia risk.
