Nine members of a family in Salem fell gravely ill on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, after preparing and eating wild mushrooms. These fungi had recently sprouted near their home following several days of rain.
Shortly after their meal, the family members began experiencing severe symptoms including vomiting and diarrhea. Some individuals also developed difficulty breathing, prompting their immediate hospitalization.
They were admitted to a private hospital in Suramangalam. Four were placed in intensive care, while the other five received treatment in separate wards. Police and Food Safety Department officials visited the site where the mushrooms were gathered and collected samples for analysis.
The Food Safety Department has issued a public advisory, urging people to refrain from collecting and consuming mushrooms that appear after periods of rain, as many wild varieties can be poisonous.
