Family lives in tents for daughter's cancer fight

An 11-year-old girl from Louisiana is bravely confronting Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma, a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer. Katie Tanton's battle began with symptoms like double vision and lightheadedness, escalating to a collapse during a school run. Following a diagnosis and the discovery of a brain tumor, she commenced radiotherapy.

Her parents, Breann and Austin, were informed that a clinical trial, located 2,000 miles away, offered the best chance of survival. To fund this costly treatment, they have undertaken a significant fundraising mission. This summer, the family began living in tents near the Ohio hospital, a decision made to save on rent and travel expenses.

Despite the hardships of living in tents, the Tanton family remains focused on Katie's treatment. Recent medical scans indicated that her tumor had shrunk, though it also caused necrosis. The brutal reality of DIPG is its near-fatal prognosis, with most children living only nine to eleven months post-diagnosis due to the tumor's infiltration of healthy brain tissue.

Amidst these challenges, the family has found solace and support through community generosity. Donations have poured in, with over $5,000 raised on their GoFundMe page within 24 hours. Social media personality Jimmy Darts has also pledged to fund a new camper vehicle for the family, aiming to improve their sleeping arrangements during this difficult period.
