22 Sep
Summary
- Health officials are tracking cancer patients due to counterfeit drug seizures.
- Licenses of 16 pharmaceutical firms cancelled, eight suspended.
- New law could jail fake drug makers for life or 5-10 years.

Health Department officials are diligently tracking cancer patients across the state to ascertain their well-being after a significant seizure of counterfeit drugs, particularly those intended for cancer treatment. In response to this crisis, licenses for 16 retail and wholesale pharmaceutical firms have been revoked, and an additional eight have been suspended.
To enhance the identification of fraudulent medications, the department has formally requested reference standards from Pfizer, although a reply is still pending. The state government has also appealed to the Union government to address the escalating issue of fake drugs nationwide.
Investigations into counterfeit medicines are progressing, with authorities considering stringent charges under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. This provision carries penalties of life imprisonment or a five-to-ten-year prison sentence for offenses committed with the intent to cause death or serious bodily harm.
Furthermore, an all-India health conclave is scheduled to convene in Bengaluru during the third week of October. This event will bring together Health Ministers and officials from across all states to deliberate and implement robust strategies for combating the proliferation of counterfeit drugs throughout the country.
