Simulated Blindness Raises Eye Care Awareness
8 Oct
Summary
- Simulation glasses mimicked vision loss conditions.
- Over 1,400 people experienced visual impairments.
- Early detection is vital for preventing blindness.
An innovative eye health awareness campaign, 'See What They See,' was recently organized by Dr. Agarwals Eye Hospital and the Institute of Optometry. Held the day before World Sight Day, the event featured undergraduate optometry students who designed simulation glasses. These glasses replicated the visual effects of common eye conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and refractive errors.
More than 1,400 participants across four locations wore these specialized glasses. This allowed them to directly experience how daily vision can be impacted by various eye diseases. Karpagam, Dean of DAIO, stressed the significance of raising awareness about silent eye diseases, encouraging regular annual eye check-ups for early detection.
Karpagam further elaborated that early detection serves as the main defense against avoidable blindness. She noted that untreated eye conditions can significantly affect an individual's independence, productivity, and overall quality of life. Prompt identification and management are crucial to prevent vision loss.
