Routine Eye Exam Reveals Life-Threatening Grapefruit Tumor
14 Mar
Summary
- A grapefruit-sized brain tumor was discovered during a routine eye exam.
- The tumor was detected due to an unusually enlarged optic nerve.
- Ms. Worswick underwent multiple surgeries and proton beam therapy.

In 2021, Holly Worswick, then 26, attended a routine eye examination at Specsavers. During the test, an optician identified an abnormality, specifically an optic nerve four times its normal size on her right side, detected via an OCT scan.
This discovery led to an urgent hospital visit and scans, revealing a brain tumor the size of a grapefruit. Ms. Worswick underwent emergency surgery within 48 hours. Despite being non-cancerous, the tumor proved persistent, requiring a total of five brain surgeries and an additional ear operation over several years.
Following her initial treatment, infections necessitated further procedures, including skull reconstruction. Despite multiple surgeries and even proton beam therapy, the tumor continued to regrow. By early 2025, it had grown near her ear canal, leading to hearing loss and the surgical closure of her ear canal, resulting in partial deafness in her right ear.
Ms. Worswick, a beauty pageant participant since age 16, has leveraged her platform to raise awareness about brain tumor symptoms and the importance of regular screenings, encouraging others to seek medical attention if they notice unusual signs.
