Donate Eyes, Restore Sight to Four
31 Aug
Summary
- One eye donor can restore sight to up to four people.
- An eye donation awareness walkathon was held in Coimbatore.
- A gap exists between corneal transplant needs and donations.

An eye donation awareness walkathon, titled 'Walk for Sight - Eye Donation Walkathon,' was organized in Coimbatore on a recent Monday. The event, held with the message 'Be the Light in Someone's Darkness,' aimed to encourage pledges for eye donation.
Organizers highlighted a significant shortage of corneal tissue for transplants. They emphasized that a single eye donor can potentially help restore vision for up to four people, as different corneal layers can be used for multiple recipients. This initiative seeks to bridge the gap between the number of individuals needing corneal transplantation and the availability of donated tissue.
Dr. Shreesh Kumar Kodavoor, president of CSOS, noted that misconceptions about eye donation need to be addressed through public awareness. The event was organized by the Coimbatore Society of Ophthalmic Surgeons (CSOS) in association with the Tamil Nadu Ophthalmic Association (TNOA) and the Indian Medical Association (IMA).
